What the future is going to be like

What the future is going to be like

It is strange to think about the future. Most of all it is strange, because not all of the people can imagine what it could be like. Some 30 years ago it was quite popular for people to express their view publicly. Especially, in the US. If you get hold of some scientific magazines from that time it will be truly fascinating as you go through them and see what the American people thought today will be like.

Nevertheless, in the past five years it looks like the human technological advancement is thriving. Not so long ago we used notebooks to write down stuff. Now we use touch screen devices. Everything is operated by touch. Sooner or later we will forget how to write by hand.

I remember the days when I was a high school student. Most of my friends had not even an idea about the cheap laptops, that now you can buy for less than £200 with argos discount vouchers. They were something like fiction that you see only in the movies. We were happy with our, pretty basic in nowadays terms, mobile phones that had monochrome displays and their most important function was the polyphonic ring tone. We used to call each other on the landline and most of the time our meeting were happening outside in the nearest park. I even remember how we used to play hide and seek. Yes, Good times.

And now, in 21st century everything is different. We use online social networks to interact with our peers and most of the time we prefer messaging than talking. Because, talking, is too much of an effort.

Now on every desk, home or office, there is at least one computer. I even know people that have more than 3 on theirs. So many folks tent to live their lives “online”, and that this is a bit disturbing.

Instead of playing with your friends outside or take the field, you sit in front of a big TV and play video games.

Does this fell right to you? And even though technology has brought numerous positive things, we need to form some boundaries.

Anthony Gidden‘s view on Globalization 5

Anthony Gidden‘s view on Globalization 5

Let me sum up Giddens‘ theories and suggestions on the Globalization phenomena, and then you can reflect on whether you could live without your pc, do you need again to buy laptop (the best version), use the internet, what are the benefits and the impacts…

Finally, Giddens suggests that although globalization is dominated by western power, it is not simply a western process; it is much more centred and uncontrolled and affects western countries the same way it affects any other countries. The writer states that we need to take more control on the globalisation processes and benefit from them in relation to human needs in order to cope with global inequalities.

Although this is the central message of the article, Giddens does not explain in detail why we need to control the global changes that much, how that could happen; what will the consequences will be and in what way this will positively influence our lives and the world. I suggest that this is a vital part of the article and it would be much clearer and influential to the reader if these were observed. I also argue that not enough attention has been paid to the impact of globalization in terms of inequality. As Lindert and Williamson (2005) state, due to globalization income gaps between nations have been reduced; opening of international trade has reduced inequality in labour-abundant countries, but have raised it in labour-scarce countries before 1914. Furthermore, considering all international and intranational effects, globalization has had overall reduces inequality and it can overall have positive effect on world incomes.

The article gives extra information on the material studied in my course and explains many of the events and changes happening nowadays. If one takes a random article from a newspaper, it can, I suggest, be related to a certain extent to the ideas that Giddens discusses, as they are broad and ranges over multiple topics.

Review: The Tape Express

Review: The Tape Express

Do you remember the roaring 80’s when all you needed for happiness was a Second hand campervans, your walkman and your favorite cassette? Well, there is no household without some old walkman somewhere and there is definitely no household without a few audio cassettes dusting in some corner of your home, but you are just too sentimental to dispose of them in the trash. You can revive everything now with the Tape Express. This little gadget will help you convert all your audio cassettes into mp3 files, connecting it to the pc through the USB cable. So, just take out those dusty cassettes from under the bed and get ready to digitalize them with the Tape Express.

The little machine resembles quite much the good old walkman or cassette player, and this is something that will get to your heart immediately. Certainly the design is modern, and the incorporated applications speak about this era and not the 80’s or even the 90’s. Now you can turn your dear songs from an old cassette into an mp3 format that you can upload on your iPod for example. The design is sleek and not that big, and it really gives you the feeling of carrying a walkman, just with highly updated features.

With the incorporated EZ Tape converter, you can transform those old songs and make them become truly alive on CD’s, DVD’s, iPods or MP3 Players. The USB cable is included within packaging, so after you receive the Tape Express you can start using it right away. Use it as a standard cassette player, or use it as a transformer for your old cassettes into digital soundings. If you attach a headphone jack, you can even play it on external speakers (the compatible headphone jack is the one that is 3.5 mm). The Tape Express is fully compatible with Windows platforms, Mac or Vista, so no worries about that.

FLYING CARS

FLYING CARS

It weird that fly cars might actually be out sooner than expected. We’ve all seen them in space age films and imagined that it would take at least a 100 years before we see one. Well, your probably wrong, the Terrafugia aircraft/car is scheduled to resealed soon for no more than $200,000. It isn’t exactly like what you’d imagine, no it doesn’t have hover like movements and no it doesn’t have a spaceship like body and no it does run on green fuel, BUT, its a start.
All things start simple and end up complicated, take for instance the road car. It was basically a skeletal structure when it first came out, now they are designed for comfort. It was a need, now its a want. As time continues to pass by maybe or grand children would be picking us up in their fancy spaceship cars. There is no saying, the speed at which technology has advanced in the last 5 decades has been so quick that things that we thought would take years to master would take no more than 5 years. God bless technology. However the very concept of a road car is destroyed, I’m going to deeply miss road cars, I can’t imagine myself sitting a weird spaceship look vehicle. Once all our cars start running on green fuel, you can forget about the roar of the vehicle that wakes you up when your on your way to work, you’ll probably fall asleep on the wheel. Although I do see lots of pros than cons from futurist vehicles like flying cars. First of, NO TRAFFIC! And secondly at the rate at which fuel is depleting we’d be forced to use green fuel, not like its not there now but later on we wont have a choice. That means to pollution.
Bottom line, we’d have to mentally prepare for a futuristic life which mind you is no far away. The used Audi that we bought as a style status would be discarded as useless piece of metal. Brace yourselves, cause I am not ready for it yet. Are you?
