4th to 5th Generation Incoming
Fourth generation (4G) phones have been on the market for a while now with the iPhone 4 leading the charge. However with mobile roaming and digital use increasing at an exponential rate, questions are starting to be asked over what impact this new technology will have.
The BBC recently covered a report by Ofcom which is concerned that mobile phone signals will interfere with digital tv in some areas of Britain. With the 4G spectrum sitting directly next to that of terrestrial digital tv channels, it is highly likely that cross interference could occur and on a regular basis as the 4G market continues to grow.
An auction for the 800Mhz band is due to take place next year with 4G expected to have a nationwide rollout soon after. When this happens the risk of interference becomes every more a likelihood. Providers are convinced though that they can filter out any interference that may occur and many are willing to contribute to educational material for their customers in order to make people aware of the potential problem before it even becomes an issue.
The latest generation of Smartphones will soon be usurped by another and by the time 4G has rolled out across the nation, it is possible that a fifth generation of mobile technology will have already hit the market. Indeed there are more then rumours coming from Apple HQ that an iPhone 5 is imminent. Knowing Apple as we do though, they may already have an iPhone 5 ready to go. The only question is whether or not the spectrum to accommodate it will be available.
